What is the ISO 14001 Standard?

ISO 14001 applies to the environmental aspects of any organization, regardless of size, type, processes, or products. ISO 14001 is flexible enough to be used in whole or in part to systematically improve environmental management.

ISO 14001 Training

To sufficiently control operational aspects that impact the environment, companies commonly deploy an environmental management system (EMS). This is a process-driven approach to managing environmental issues and liabilities, such as reducing waste and carbon footprint. Implementing ISO 14001 training in your organization demonstrates to your stakeholders, customers, and staff that you are committed to reducing your environmental impact.

How to Meet the ISO 14001 Requirements

ISO 14001 Plan: Establish, maintain, and communicate environmental objectives and implementation processes regarding ISO 14001 activities.

EMS: Implement an EMS to effectively manage and improve the environmental impact of your organization’s product, service, operation, and production processes.

Document Management: Establish a document control system that stores and manages documents relating to managing your environmental policy and maintaining a compliant EMS in accordance with the ISO 14001 requirements.

Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA): Implement an internal audit process. Ensure your organization engages in timely corrective and preventive action on deficiencies identified during internal and external audits.

Effective Communication: Ensure your organization communicates at all levels concerning the processes and effectiveness of your EMS. This includes providing easy access, routing, and approval of documents.

Employee Training: Ensure employees are aware of the relevance and importance of their activities and contribution to achieving compliance with ISO 14001 requirements. This includes identifying competency needs and maintaining personnel training records.

ISO 14001 Certification

ISO 14001 is the only standard in the ISO 14000 series in which companies can be registered or certified. Companies that are ISO 14001 certified demonstrate that their environmental impact is continuously measured and improved. ISO 14001 certification can give companies a competitive advantage, improve their reputation, and boost confidence among stakeholders.

The ISO does not issue certifications. To achieve ISO 14001 compliance, companies need to work with external certification bodies. Before beginning the certification process, the ISO recommends reviewing the related guidelines and standards it publishes, as they are used by certification bodies to perform the certifications.

ISO 14001 Software Features

The ISO does not prescribe specific software for setting up and maintaining an EMS. A primary goal of ISO 14001 is to make organizations more aware of and accountable for their environmental impact, which involves the following:

  • An environmental policy and management program.
  • Environmental goals and objectives.
  • A training program.
  • Environmental impact and reduction process documentation.
  • A method for easily communicating both internally and externally about the environmental policy.

MasterControl and ISO 14001 Documentation

MasterControl’s automated solutions help companies achieve ISO 14001 compliance by integrating all EMS-related activities and documentation processes.

  • Document Control – Easily manage, route, and store environmental policy documentation.
  • Change Control – Maintain an audit trail for every change made to ISO 14001 documentation, and automate data gathering and reporting.
  • Training Management – Create a multi-format training program, including computer-based and instructor-led training. Track training gaps and deficiencies. Create training program status reports.
  • CAPA – Track and organize audit findings and other nonconformance issues. Generate reports to give stakeholders a real-time view of issue statuses and mitigation efforts.
  • Audits – Effectively manage audit schedules and inspections, consolidate audit data, and quickly resolve environmental issues as they are discovered.
  • Facilitate communication at various levels – Ensure that all stakeholders have access to relevant information and up-to-date data. This fosters transparency and consistency among all business units and EMS processes.
