MasterControl Hosts Education Days to Develop Interest In STEM Education

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA – November 20, 2018 – During the month of October, MasterControl hosted a series of Education Days for the children of its more than 400 employees with the intention of increasing curiosity and interest in STEM learning. More than 325 children, ranging in ages from 3 to 18, attended the event this year.

Knowing that technology jobs will drive future economies, MasterControl chose the theme “robotics” for this year and developed a series of fun, technology-driven activities around building and programming robots to entertain and educate the attendees. Kids were encouraged to think of ways that technology, artificial intelligence and robots could solve some of the world’s more challenging problems. Events were designed by age group so kids could engage with their peers and activities would provide a stimulating experience commensurate with age.

“STEM education will be critical in developing the future workforce and we want to get kids excited about taking this path with their education,” said Alicia Garcia VP of Human Resources for MasterControl. “We had about 40 team members from around the company volunteer for the event, many of them coming to talk about their cool jobs and show kids where a STEM education can take them.”

“Education day at MasterControl showed me that I could create cool innovations someday to solve problems and make the world a better place,” said Madison Ruiz, 9th-grader at West Jordan Middle School.

“The robots are fun to program and it made me interested in learning more about how to use tech in business,” said Taylor Hurst, 8th-grader at Indian Hills Middle School.

To foster engagement in technology after the event, all kids were gifted a technology device. Younger kids received a Kindle Fire with an interactive programming game and older kids received an iPad and a robot.

“It’s cool to see our employees’ kids excited about education and robotics,” said Jon Beckstrand, CEO of MasterControl. “We have been doing this for 12 years and every year, our team enjoys inspiring the next generation about the possibilities resulting from STEM education.”
