SALT LAKE CITY, USA – September 12, 2018 – MasterControl, a leading global provider of software solutions that enable life science and other regulated companies to deliver life‐improving products to more people sooner, sponsored the Beehive Science & Technology Academy (BSTA) robotics team during the 2017-2018 academic year. The year included participation at the FIRSTTech Challenge, a robotics competition that requires teens in grades 7-12 to create teams of 10 or more members and design, build, program and operate robots while realizing the value of hard work, innovation and idea sharing.
The BSTA team took first place at the FIRSTTech event which was held at West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, on January 14, 2018. Their win took them to the state robotics competition in February 2018 where they placed among Utah teams with the third highest score. Their ranking allowed them to participate in nationals in Houston, Texas, in May 2018.
BSTA is an open enrollment, tuition-free charter school that opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2005. The Academy distinguishes itself with a long history of robotics education and with its college preparatory programs that focus on math, science and technology.
MasterControl Executive Vice President of Product, Matt Lowe, attended the regional competition. He commented that from his own observations, “…students learn complex problem-solving skills, mechanical design, control systems, team work and community service” as they participate in the experience. Lowe also said that MasterControl is proud to sponsor these types of technological and educational experiences for teens in the community.
Royd Nelson, the coach of the Academy’s robotics team says that all three competitions required a lot of combined skills from his team. “Robotics teaches kids not only engineering, design and programming principles, but also a lot of non-technical skills, such as cooperation, teamwork, prototype testing, perseverance and organization,” Nelson said. “They also have the opportunity to promote the robotics organization which gives them the chance to present, demonstrate answers and speak in front of groups.”
Nelson said he is especially proud of the 2017/2018 team because “they are talented, hardworking and very dedicated to the team and each other. They worked hard to excel and to make the experience positive for all.”
“Sponsorships from companies like MasterControl make a huge difference in the lives of the robotics team members,” Nelson said when asked how MasterControl and other sponsors impact the team. “Robotics competitions cost money and sponsorships allow team members to focus more on robotics and less on fundraising activities, giving the kids wonderful opportunities to learn to work together, gain confidence and have experiences that will give them a big leap forward in their preparations for technical careers.”
