The Smart Way to Do Smarter Food Safety

In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) introduced the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to curb foodborne illnesses. FSMA was a tall order and some aspects of it are still being implemented, but that hasn’t stopped the FDA from looking to the future. Specifically, when it comes to how technology can help make food safer.

With this focus, the FDA has announced a “New Era of Smarter Food Safety.” What does that new era look like? At the time of this writing, it’s very open-ended. No regulations or guidance have been released, but the FDA does want to develop a “Blueprint for a New Era of Smarter Food Safety” (Blueprint) that includes three general areas: food traceability, digital technologies and evolving food business models.¹ Even as the Blueprint is being discussed, some food companies are still implementing FSMA in their organizations. The good news for those who feel overwhelmed is that digitizing processes moves companies into this “new era” faster while making it easier to comply with FSMA.
