ISO 9001:2015 Part 2: New QMS Structure

April 30, 2015

The second part of Walt Murray and Peter Knauer’s ISO 9001:2015 series focuses on the quality management system (QMS). Of the ten main sections of ISO 9001, the first three are very similar to what they’ve been in the past, but there are substantial revisions to the remaining sections.

As Walt and Peter walk viewers through the new QMS structure, there’s an emphasis on leadership and risk throughout the requirements. While management review used to be a step fairly early on in the process, it’s been moved to significantly later. This is in keeping with the emphasis on leadership involvement in the new standard.

Risk has a prominent place in all aspects of ISO 9001:2015. Walt and Peter talk more about this is Part 3, but they do mention here that preventive action is no longer part of the standard. Now the focus is on continual improvement and risk-based thinking. You’ll learn more about this approach in Part 3.
