The Blood Center of Iowa found themselves growing at an accelerated pace. Geographical territories were expanding and the need to establish collection facilities, both fixed and remote to those territories, made it difficult to keep up. The emergence of new diseases in the United States required all blood establishments to evolve donor screening and viral testing procedures. The combination of growth and need to adapt to changing standards proved challenging to ensure blood quality, especially when all the paperwork associated with donor screening and testing processes was performed manually.
